A licence suited to your horizon.

In France, a pleasure-boat licence is required to operate a motorboat above 4.5 kW (6 hp). These licences concern recreational boating.

Which licence

At sea, near the coast

Coastal option

6 nautical milesfrom a safe haven · about 11 km

What it allows

Navigate at sea within 6 nautical miles of a safe haven, by day or night. The licence sets no upper engine-power limit. It also applies on lakes and enclosed bodies of water.

Its limits

It does not allow you beyond this distance or onto rivers and canals. A safe haven depends on the boat and conditions: distance is not simply measured from the coast.

Offshore extension

What it allows

Go beyond 6 nautical miles from a safe haven, by day or night. This extends the coastal licence and develops chart navigation, passage calculations and tidal knowledge.

Its limits

Sea conditions, the vessel, its equipment and local rules still determine what is possible. It does not replace an inland licence or a professional skipper qualification.

Rivers and canals

Inland waterways option

Under 20 min boat length

What it allows

Operate a recreational motorboat under 20 metres long on inland waterways, including rivers and canals.

Its limits

It does not authorise sea navigation. From 20 metres upwards, the large inland craft extension is required. Each waterway’s local navigation rules still apply.

Larger boats on inland waterways

Large inland craft extension

20 m and overno licence-related upper length limit

What it allows

Operate a recreational boat of 20 metres or more on inland waterways. This extension broadens the inland option to larger craft.

Its limits

It does not authorise sea navigation and is not a professional qualification. The vessel’s characteristics and the waterway network rules must still be respected.

BEFORE YOU START

The right
questions.

Is a licence enough to rent MIYO?+

The appropriate licence is required to drive MIYO without a skipper. The navigation area, rental contract, insurance and briefing also define the conditions of your trip. An offshore extension does not automatically expand the rental company’s permitted area.

What about sailing boats or professional activity?+

At sea, recreational sailing boats do not require this motorboat licence, even with an auxiliary engine. On rivers and canals, a sailing boat with an engine above 4.5 kW requires the inland licence appropriate to its length. These licences do not replace the qualifications and requirements of professional activity.

Can I use it abroad?+

There is no single international maritime boating licence. French licensing rules apply to French-flagged boats, including abroad. For foreign-flagged boats, check recognition with local authorities and the rental company.

How do I prepare my application?+

Start by describing your plans in the form. KANOA will explain the options and documents needed. For a first option, training takes place with an approved provider and a medical certificate less than six months old is required. This form is an enquiry, not an official registration.
